Title: CMC outdoor exhibits Japanese Zen garden
Links: 8 Images: 9
Summary: In February 1995, construction began on a traditional Japanese Zen Garden located on a roof-top site at the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Canada's National Capital Region. The Garden theme is Wakei No Niwa, which means to know and respect other cultures, their history, spirit and people, leading to harmony between all cultures. The traditional Zen garden design will be executed with Canadian-sourced plant material and rocks. Largest version (133K) Designed by the renowned landscape architect and Zen Buddhist Monk, Shunmyo Toshiaki Masuno Japan Landscape Consultants Ltd. (Yokohama, Japan), the garden design features an extensive raked gravel garden, a dry waterfall and stone bridge. Two additional phases for the garden are also planned: phase three at the Museum's main plaza level which will mark the entrance to the garden and introduce the roof top garden up and beyond the wall; and phase four at an upper level above the main garden. The Japanese Garden Trust Fund has been established for sponsorship contributions of individuals, corporations and foundations who have generously supported the development of the Garden, in partnership with the Museum and the Commemorative Association for the Japan World Exposition (1970).
Title: UBC Botanical Garden More from Nitobe Garden
Links: 4 Images: 5
Summary: The overall purpose of this authentically traditional Nitobe Memorial Garden is to refresh the spirit and to provide a sense of peace and harmony with nature and with one's fellow man. As a work of art it may create illusions of change in time or space, or provide lessons in asthetics, morals or the human journey, deepening the viewer's understanding of life. Renovation and enhancement of the Nitobe Memorial Garden was started in 1992. In order to restore balance and symmetry in the Stroll Garden and around the Tea House there was extensive pruning and some plant material was replaced. The hedge surrounding the garden was replaced by a wall and fencing to help preserve tranquility and improve security. He was assisted by an 18th generation garden builder, Shinichi Sano, and a small team of skilled gardeners from Kyoto.
Title: San Jose Living Gardens
Links: 20 Images: 7
Summary: Winding paths around the ponds & over knolls, as well as a series of foot bridges, lead to a tea house where visitors may relax & enjoy refreshments. Map available San Jose's 5-1/2 acre Rose Garden draws visitors from the United States and all around the world. Visitors can expect to see hybrid-teas, the largest group of plants; floribundas; grandifloras; miniature roses; climbers, trained up onto the fences surrounding the Garden; and polyanthas, low growing shrubs with clusters of small flowers. Map available Visitors will enjoy natural wildlife sanctuaries amid a peaceful pond setting surrounded by beautiful trees, shrubs, and flowering plants, and accented by the Chinese Cultural Garden. A city block of beauty, the Heritage Rose Garden compliments the Municipal Rose Garden by providing a living history of roses from the earliest wild roses from around the world through the middle ages; the damasks, musks, and polianthas of the 19th century to the familiar hybrid roses of today. Some of the programs they offer are: the Summer Performing Arts Season which presents music, theater and dance; the Artist Residency Program, offering 25 artists per year the space and time to create; the Gallery at Montalvo, exhibiting the work of regional artists and Montalvo artist residents; the Literary Arts Program, which includes workshops, a writing competition for Santa Clara County High School students and a Biennial Poetry Contest; and a Summer Performing Arts Camp for children.

Title: Japanese Garden Database
Links: 28 Images: 11
Summary: This database is an attempt to pull together a variety of media and information associated with gardens of Japan. The gardens themselves can be reached through the title bar at the top and bottom of each page. Other kind of information related to the gardens and the project can be reached through links in the left column. A number of gardens appear in the pages that follow, but I have only written detailed articles on a half dozen or so. I would encourage those who are interesting in constructing a 'Japanese garden' to approach it as an application of the principles of design inherent in these gardens rather than simply learning how to set up a stone basin or clip a pine tree. One could easily apply the principles of Japanese garden design to a place that is about computers, television and the nuclear family.

Title: Translating the Japanese Garden
Links: 30 Images: 28
Summary: The tradition of Japanese gardens has been an inspiration for centuries and yet it is a living tradition, influencing the creation of new gardens and landscapes, both in Japan and in the west. Kariya Park in Mississauga has been chosen as a contemporary example of a Canadian landscape that uses the principles of Japanese garden design in a new context. (see fig.1) The variety of Japanese gardens has led to the breakdown of these gardens into four types; gardens as natural landscapes; gardens as paradise; gardens as a place of enlightenment and gardens as a 'rustic path' (tea house). It was not intended that pieces of Japanese architecture, rock or planting design to be replicated exactly, rather that the intent or philosophy of Japanese garden design be used in compiling compositions using materials available in Mississauga. "The Japanese dry rock garden, where water is suggested with sand only and great mountains are indicated with a few rocks, is perhaps the ultimate ideal landscape, a garden of the mind. In the first known Japanese book about landscape design, "Sakuteiki", the opening words laid down important guidelines: (Cave, 70) In making a garden you should first understand the overall principles : 1) According to the lay of the land and depending upon the aspect of the water landscape, you should design each part of the garden tastefully, recalling your memories of how nature presented itself for each feature.
Title: The Japanese Garden
Links: 7 Images: 0
Summary: " The largest traditional Japanese Garden in North America, Seiwa-en covers 14 acres, including a 4-1/2-acre lake surrounded by expansive lawns and a meandering path. Koichi Kawana, designer of Seiwa-en, said that a Japanese garden cannot be fully explained in words, but must be experienced. The garden must be seen with the mind, not just the eyes, allowing the imagination to move beyond the obvious to discover deeper spiritual meanings. The simplicity of a Japanese garden results from a willingness to expend enormous amounts of care and resources on every detail to create an atmosphere of unaffected naturalness and tranquility. The sounds of water provide music throughout Seiwa-en, from the gurgle of a brook to the drip from a bamboo spout into a stone basin. Seiwa-en was inspired in 1972 by a proposal of the Japanese American Citizen's' League to establish a Japanese garden at the Missouri Botanical Garden.

Title: East LA Students Rebuild Japanese Garden
Links: 3 Images: 0
Summary: While studying the history of their school, members of Youth Task Force L.A. (YTFLA) at Roosevelt High School learned that their school once was the site of a beautiful Japanese garden. The garden was built by the many Japanese-American students who attended Roosevelt High during the 1930s and early '40s. When the United States entered World War II, anti-Japanese sentiment ran so high that the federal government ordered Japanese-Americans on the West Coast relocated to internment camps. lt also lost its Japanese garden, which was destroyed by community members caught up in the anti-Japanese fervor of the time. But when YTFLA members learned of the garden, they decided to rebuild it as a tribute to the Japanese Americans interned during the war and to the many former Roosevelt students of Japanese ancestry who died fighting for this country. They invited former students to tell them about the garden and Roosevelt High in the 1930s. From their research, the students mapped out what the 4,000 square-foot garden looked like and made a list of plants and materials they would need. On the day it was finished, YTFLA teacher adviser Jeff Avila surveyed the garden with Gloria Antunez and Katie Barrera, two students who played major roles in the project.
Title: Japanese Garden Composition
Links: 8 Images: 3
Summary: The Japanese take great care when deciding on the composition of a garden. I find it interesting how many Japanese gardens imitate other places. The garden at Hikone castle is a "wet garden," one with a pond, that imitates Lake Biwa. The detail is so great and the garden so well planned that there are even rocks in the pond to represent islands found in Lake Biwa. Generally I dislike rainy days, but I have discovered that rainy days often bring out the best in a Japanese garden. On dry, sunny days a Japanese garden often looks dull and washed out, but on a rainy day it really comes to life.

Summary: The Japanese garden was built to mark the tenth anniversary in 1990 of the sister-state relationship between the State of Victoria and the Aichi Prefecture in Japan. This garden and an Australian garden in Nagoya, the capital of Aichi, were created to symbolise the strong friendship between the two states and to reflect the natural beauty of their respective landscapes. A joint project of the Victorian Government and the formerly named Zoological Board of Victoria, the garden was opened in November 1991.

Summary: In one of these courtyards we have a Japanese Garden. Clases can go out into the garden to study what types of shrubs and trees that gardens in Japan compared to gardens in America. In 1993, students received this great gift from the money they raised from the yearly fundraiser. The other courtyard has a series of trees, some of the dedicated to teachers and faculty members who have passed away. The trees dedicated to them give students and teachers a wonderful reminder of their life.

Title: History of the Japanese House
Links: 7 Images: 8
Summary: The ground on which the Japanese House now stands has had a Japanese structure and landscaping almost continuously since the 1876 Centennial Exposition, when the Japanese Bazaar and garden were in the area. From 1905 until a fire in 1955, the site was occupied by a gate from a Japanese Buddhist temple, built in the early seventeenth century. The Pine Breeze Villa was designed by Yoshimura Junzoo, built in 1953 in Nagoya, and presented by the America-Japan Society of Tokyo to the Museum of Modern Art New York for exhibition in 1954-55. It was given to the City of Philadelphia and reassembled at the current site in 1958, with a garden designed by Sano Tansai. The house and garden underwent extensive repairs, as a gift from the Japanese government and people in honor of the U.S. Bicentennial, in 1976. In 1982 the Friends of the Japanese House and Garden organized to preserve this unique facility.

A stately Umbrella Pine (Sciadopitys verticillata) on the island in the center of the garden, is surrounded by Japanese Yew (Taxus cuspidata), Japanese Cherry (Prunus serrulata), and Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum). Title: THE JAPANESE GARDEN SHINTO and TRADITIONAL ARCHITECTURE
Links: 6 Images: 4
Summary: The Japanese garden is very important both to traditional Japanese architecture and as a reflection of Japanese religious values. Traditional Japanese architecture, for instance, is very "open" and very much a part of the outside world (hence closely tied to the garden). Moreover the Japanese garden is usually placed so as to be seen from the most important part of the house (or from where one would place a tea ceremony room). From this room you can look out directly upon the garden and gaze at its beauty. My understanding of the underlying principles and assumptions behind Japanese gardens, based on How to Look at Japanese Art by Steven Addis (a textbook I read for class), is also that there is a sense throughout the garden of the presence of kami or "gods". And so, nature -- especially in the garden -- reflects the beauty and purity of the gods.

Summary: " The largest traditional Japanese Garden in North America, Seiwa-en covers 14 acres, including a 4-1/2 acre lake surrounded by expansive lawns and a meanderin g path. Koichi Kawana, designer of Seiwa-en, said that a Japanese garden cannot be fully explained in words, but must be experienced. Every aspect of Seiwa-en has been subtly refined to encourage v isitors to slow down, to contemplate and observe. The careful observer will discover that Japanese aesthetic principles are interrelated, each reinforcing another. To allow freedom for the imagination, Japanese gardens are monochromatic compositions of greens, browns, and blacks with color used only as an accent. The simplicity of a Japanese garden results from a willingness to expend enormous amounts of care and resources on every detail to create an atmosphere of unaffected naturalness and tranquility. Seiwa-en was inspired in 1972 by a proposal of the Japanese American Citizens' League to establish a Japanese garden at the Missouri Botanical Garden.
Title: Kurimoto Japanese Garden
Links: 2 Images: 5
Summary: The Kurimoto Japanese Garden, occupying five acres, is one of only a few Japanese gardens established in northern latitudes. Each element - from the grassy hills to the streams, ponds, and small waterfall - has been carefully arranged to create an area of peace and quiet for meditation. It offers visitors an opportunity to experience the different sense of space, use of shapes, and foliage basic to Japanese Garden design. The artful arrangement of an ornamental gate, stone pagoda, arched bridge, bell tower, azumaya, tumbling waterfall, streams and pond is a feast for the senses. Every rock is positioned to expose patterns of lichen and mosses to create a symbolic grouping or guide tumbling water. The Japanese-style pavilion (situated on the periphery of the Kurimoto Japanese Garden) provides a centre for cultural exchanges between Japan and Canada. The pavilion provides a spectacular view of the Kurimoto Japanese Garden and offers an outstanding setting for small workshops and retreats.

Title: THE JAPANESE GARDEN
Links: 3 Images: 3
Summary: Imitating the landscape of deep mountains and secluded valleys, the Japanese Garden with its two waterfalls is rich in symbolic meaning for the Carter Center. According to the designer, the large waterfall, magnificent and dignified, symbolizes President Carter, a man of grace, compassion, and integrity. The small waterfall is a cascade symbolizing the beautiful Mrs. Carter, a lady known for her intelligence and continuing contributions to the president's great achievements. The clear, pure, swift large fall dashes against the rocks and, merging with the small fall, flows into the lower pond. The two stone lanterns placed in the heart of the garden symbolize the hope that the activities of the Carter Center, led by President Carter, will bring the glorious light of peace and happiness to shine in every corner of the world. The Japanese Garden was contributed by Tadao Yoshida, founder and president of Yoshida Kogyo K.K. (YKK), as an expression of his long personal friendship with President Carter.
