In the beginning...

After filling in the existing swimming pool, we replaced in with a pond. First we positioned the three major rocks, the largest weighing over 10 tons. Then we contoured the pond which now has a butyl liner. A soil scientist friend had told me that since the fill was principally clay, we wouldn't have to worry about leakage; it would seal itself. Well, you should have seen my water bill that month! Ultimately we had to remove all the rocks that had been so carefully placed around the edge of the pond, put in a liner, and replace the rocks, one by one.

Three truck loads and one hundred fifty tons of stones later, we had the necessary rocks for our garden. The volcanic stones came from a quarry near Troy, Idaho. The rounded, river stones came from the Snake River in Idaho.

Laying out the pathways meandering through the garden was fun. The bender board has since been replaced with stones. Beyond the retaining wall is the English cottage garden. A Japanese sleeve fence will serve as a segue to mask the bird bath.
